On March 5, 2005 members of humane groups, dog trainers and dog lovers responded by the dozens to our 2nd Annual Dog Owner Education Brunch featuring nationally known behaviorist and trainer PAT MILLER.  We sold out two weeks prior to this event and we purchased another room to accommodate additional guests. We had FANTASTIC turnout.
Guests arrived an hour early to register, purchase raffle tickets, and shop at our MAGDRL merchandise table. Non-MAGDRL members received our Rescuer's Record newsletter plus foster, volunteer, and Delaware Dog Fest brochures.

Seated at the table are Joan Schramm and Eileen Edelblute, and Cindy Prevost is standing. They validated registered attendees, sold raffle tickets, and kept things moving. We also set up an easel and a board with MAGDRL information, and during the break we sold training books in this area. Like last year, the staff at Best Western Hotel in College Park, MD did a great job!

Guests enjoyed a delicious brunch of roast beef, breakfast meats, pasta marinara, salad, breakfast pastries, fresh fruits, and omelets made-to-order. This year the brunch buffet was open for two hours, and beverages, coffee and tea were delivered at noon.

By the time breakfast was over, every seat was filled. We were delighted that besides pre-registered attendees, we had walk-in registrants bringing our total to 119 attendees. We had guests from DC, MD, VA, WV, DE, NJ, PA -- and as far away as Arizona!

PAT MILLER spoke with guests about the benefits of positive reinforcement behavior modification versus traditional approaches --that there are many more options for eliciting desired behaviors. She made the point that dogs respond more effectively when they are motivated by things of value to them, not necessarily what we humans value.

The audience was invited to ask questions throughout, and attendees appreciated having the opportunity to hear solutions to a broad range of behaviors from this nationally known expert..

MAGDRL members, large and small businesses, craftsman, and others donated items for our Premium Gift Raffle. We were particularly pleased to have several trainers offer multi-week dog training classes in the raffle.

Prize winners were from MD, NJ, VA, and PA.. After raffling prizes, fresh floral dog-themed centerpieces and two giant Scooby Doo balloons were also raffled off. Gift items that were won by those not in attendance will be mailed to the winners.

The Maryland MAGDRL Team was delighted that the Brunch presented an opportunity to spend time with volunteers from other areas whom we rarely see, and some of whom we met for the first time. Fortunately we know our "extended family" well thanks to the MAGDRL Yahoo group.
